A new class awakens in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis

  • While the Harmonizer doesn’t look like an intimidating weapon, the Waker’s primary kill device is sure to make its mark.
  • Answering the question “Are there mounts in NGS?” is about to get harder with the introduction of one of the Waker’s abilities – Fredran Riding.
  • Blocking attacks angers Marmelo, and at some point his anger can be explosive.

This is not the first time that a new class has been introduced in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis (PSO2:NGS) since its launch in June 2021. The sci-fi-themed action-RPG saw the addition of Braver, a powerhouse wielding a bow and a katana in August of the same year, followed by Bouncer exploding on Jet Boots with rising blades in October. Waker’s introduction this week will however be quite different in that it is not a class that was present in Star Fantasy Online 2 (PSO2).

Although it bears a slight resemblance to the popular summoner class of PSO2 in the choice of weapon (the Harmonizer), this class does not pamper, feed, or frolic with pets. No, there’s definitely no candy box to deal with here. Waker unleashes photonic and animalistic manifestations of death and destruction in a cunning dance in keeping with the game’s fluid combat style. far. With single-target and area-of-effect (AOE) damage abilities, Waker is as versatile as it is complex, and I’ll describe what I mean by that in the paragraphs below.

As mentioned above, the Waker uses the Harmonizer, and by taking the Harmonizer Focus skill from his skill tree, the Waker contributes to the Familiar’s Focus gauge associated with the Photon Art (PA) he uses to damage a enemy. In short, if you make noise with an AP tied to Wulfren, you’ll build Wulfren’s Focus Gauge. Ride Fredran into battle and mow down your enemies (yes, you can and it’s an AP called Fredran Riding) and you’ll increase Fredran’s focus gauge. Additionally, there’s a pretty big payoff to building their Focus gauges in tandem, as you can then spend some of them using the familiar Harmony of the Class Skill, which unleashes them. simultaneously for harmonious havoc.

The above might seem simple enough, but the game changes when you consider that each of the abilities available to Waker changes when “charged”, or the button is held down for a period of time before releasing it. For example, the aforementioned ability Fredran Riding, when used normally, simply commands the Fredran to fire a ranged blast at enemies. The real magic comes when you charge the ability and then find yourself charging enemies at your winged pet. When the AP is finally freed, Fredran comes out in a burst of glory and takes the enemies ahead of you with it.

Wulfen’s demolition is also complicated, with the actions performed by the big familiar being different depending on whether you charge the ability or not, but also for how long you load capacity. Uncharged, Wulfen performs a shockwave attack. Charged up for a short time, Wulfen will land his ground strike and cause a few aftershocks in the surrounding area for a while. Charged longer will consume extra PP and Wulfen will perform a much stronger attack than his normal ground weight. These are just two of the abilities Waker can use in battle, and the others are no less complex.

Additionally, there is another familiar that comes at the Waker’s call – Marmelo. After successfully deflecting an enemy attack using your weapon action, Marmelo will grow larger (up to twice his size). Holding the weapon action before releasing will then result in cast Marmelo on enemies, causing an explosion on a direct hit. Finally, the Waker can also take the ability Treble Clef Marking from his skill tree – which causes normal attacks, after several are aimed at the same enemy, to apply a “mark” which increases damage taken as well as factor reduction applied (increases stun chance, basically.) Holding down normal attack while targeting an enemy marked with a treble clef will cause the mark to detonate.

There are other things in the Waker skill tree that make the gameplay even more interesting, but just based on the above, you could easily find yourself charging into battle aboard a winged familiar, causing an earthquake, summoning both pets at the same time for chaos tandem, throwing a different pet like a bomb, while detonating marked enemies in between. It’s not leisurely gameplay, but it’s an absolute “blast” once you get the hang of it. If you’ve become quite fond of your current class but Waker intrigues you, know that you can select it as a subclass, but the benefits of doing so mostly come in the form of ensuring your survival, as many abilities rely on the use of the Harmonizer.

If you don’t play PSO2:NGS however, now is the perfect time to familiarize yourself (pun intended). All you need to do is visit the Xbox or Windows Store on console or PC and download the game for free to experience the wonders of planet Halpha for yourself.
