Kevin Bacon Returns To The Summer Camp Slasher Genre

One thing to note, “They/Them” is the directorial debut of John Logan, one of the best screenwriters in the business. He wrote ‘The Aviator’, ‘Gladiator’, ‘Hugo’, ‘Skyfall’ and one of the best unproduced projects I’ve ever read, an adaptation of the script for the video game ‘Bioshock’ that Gore Verbinski was supposed to perform directly. after the third film “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

Being a good screenwriter doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be a good director, but we do know that the script for “They/Them” should be at least super strong and every now and then you’ll get a Christopher McQuarrie from that particular path. From the trailer, I can already see a bit of style showing through, and he expressed it very well. Not only do you have Bacon, but you also have Anna Chlumsky (“Veep”) and I will always be happy to see her on screen.

The official synopsis describes the film as “an empowering slasher flick,” which is also a bit of a relief. We want our on-screen gay and queer characters to be flawed and vulnerable, especially in a horror movie, but there’s also the danger of being a little too joyful watching a bunch of queer kids get massacre. Maybe it’s the twist? Maybe it’s not the young people on the chopping block this time around, but rather the older ones running the conversion camp?

Guess we’ll see this August!
